The 5 fears that Haunt First-Time Moms

The 5 fears that Haunt First-Time Moms

FEAR NUMBER ONE – My Baby will be ugly!!

It’s a daunting thing being pregnant for the first time. Perhaps it’s the hormones perhaps it’s a secret late fear since childhood or perhaps it’s just a glimpse at another first time baby, a baby with a gorgeous mummy and a hunky daddy, and you secretly think to yourself open “Maybe they swapped the baby at the hospital??”

But, you coo and goo, and stroll on wondering what your baby’s going to look like?  Those big ears and the rather biggest nose that never bothered you before and your husband well suddenly they seem rather significant and for a while at least the thought of the whole genetic pool makes the tummy turn!

FEAR NUMBER TWO – Dropping the baby!

I was one who reached out to hold a baby whenever I saw one, and when I think back on it now, how oblivious was I!. I find myself doing a mental tally of my relatives and friends, contemplating which one I will let hold my baby, and the list is surprisingly short – maybe my mother? Definitely not his mother!

My best friend drinks too much – never thought so while I was pregnant – but now I’m definitely convinced, and no judgement, but I’m not I don’t think I will let her hold the baby, not until it’s about four years old.

FEAR NUMBER THREE – Post-partum will never leave me!

My friends and I decided a long time ago when we were in our early teens that postpartum depression is something that mothers never get over!  perhaps it was the mere sight of us in skirts that were way too short, make-up that was way too thick, or some equally trivial thing that resurrected the full-blown postpartum depro in our mothers – and they acted out, believe me! So I find myself wondering, will I be like that?

Will I be hyper-critical, overly neurotic, paranoid when they are a little bit past curfew. I used to imagine that was impossible, I was going to my daughter’s bestie,  but now, the baby is not even here and already I feel in adequate. I’ve wathed a few mother’s changing those messy diapers – or rather, I’ve run from mothers changing those smelly diapers, and given my stomach’s delicate constitution, how on earth will I cope??  And the hubbie? Maybe he can do that but what will I do when he’s at work?? I can’t possibly wait until he’s home!  Oh the dilemmas that face first-time preggers Mums!
