7 Knee Exercises to Save Your Knees

7 Knee Exercises You Can Do Now to Save Your Knees Later Knee pain is a common problem, especially as we age. Surprisingly, there are several things you can do to prevent or reduce knee pain. Regular knee exercises are one of the best ways to keep your knees healthy and strong. Here are seven exercises that can help save your knees later in life: 1. Hamstring curls: Strengthening the muscles around the back of your thigh can help take some of the strain off your knees. To do this knee exercise, lie on your back with your legs straight. Place a resistance band around your ankles and slowly curl your legs up towards your butt, then release back to the starting position.   2. Quadriceps stretches: Stretching the muscles in the front of your thigh can help prevent knee pain. To do this stretch, stand straight up, and hold onto a chair or other object for balance. Bend one leg back behind you, keeping your knee straight, and grab your ankle with your hand. Pull your heel towards your butt and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.   3. Heel raises: Strengthening your calf muscles can help reduce knee pain and prevent injuries. To do this exercise, stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold onto a chair or other support for balance. Slowly raise your body up onto your toes, then lower back down. Repeat 10-15 times.   4. Hip abduction: This exercise helps to strengthen the muscles around your hips, which can take some of the strain off your knees. To do this exercise, lie on your side with your legs straight. Lift your top leg up towards the ceiling, and after that lower it back down. Repeat 10-15 times, then switch sides and

Gardening with Kids

Teaching kids about gardening encourages an appreciation for nature from a young age. It also shows the impact of putting effort into something and seeing a result. It shows awareness of where our food comes from as well and a skill that will always provide for you. How do we start? Designate an area of your garden or a container that is specifically for your child. Make the area fun with a little garden décor acquired from your local nursery. Let them select what to plant. We suggest veggies that they don’t altogether dislike (it’s easier to get them enthused when they know they aren’t growing broccoli) and also go colorful. Kids respond to color. Here are some great first vegetable and fruit plants to start off with (climate and weather dependent): Strawberries – if your kids are a bit older start off with strawberry seeds. Let them harvest the seed from an existing strawberry. Blueberries – blueberries are prolific fruit-bearing plants if they are happy. This is a great example of teaching kids the importance of soil and compost. Blueberries prefer acidic soil, so either make your own by adding iron sulphate or obtaining acid compost from the nursery. To further teach the lesson, consider iron shavings to be added in very small doses to explain the concept of iron and acidity. Tomatoes – these hardy plants lead very little in terms of intervention and thanks to birds, bugs, wind etc tend to always find a spot in the garden and germinate. Grow these from seeds as they grow quickly and it\’s important to teach grooming a plant from seedling stage. Tomatoes also distinguish the importance of rambling vs bushy plants. Cucumbers – not a particularly bitter vegetable and refreshing to eat, most kids are not averse to growing

Teach your kids to be grateful

Teach your kids to be grateful Zig Ziglar said gratefulness is the healthiest of all human emotions, and as parents its one emotion we tend not to prioritize. Teach your kids to be grateful, to find happiness with what they have and not what they want. Does it matter if your kids don’t have everything? What message are we sending them about happiness by continually feeding that habit? Mom, as you kneel alongside the bath at bathtime tell your kids that you are grateful for them and this moment. Teach them to be happy within themselves, their internal GPS of Joy based on their own actions and thoughts; not dependent on external factors which may come and go with the weather. Focus on your child’s sense of self and ask him what he values. The clearer picture he has of himself and who he is as a person makes him less inclined to be influenced, hurt or led astray. And mom, as you kneel to perform your gardening tasks be grateful for the nurturing environment you choose to create: a happy home; good health and peace of mind. Teach your kids they deserve to be happy; even if they don’t comprehend the lesson at the time; eventually it will sink in when that moment comes (and everyone has that moment at some point in your life; mine was quitting a job). Finding happiness is a habit, so stick your head out from time to time and look for it; though the view is lonely at times, the air is better up there. And mom next time you are scrubbing floors on your knees; look for the joy in the moment: that order brings clarity and a clean home serenity. Moms, dads, kids – choose to measure your success by your
